About the Club

Walking together through the greater Omaha area since 1919

About the club
Club Overview

The Omaha Walking Club walks once weekly on Sunday afternoons, exploring a wonderful variety of locations throughout the greater Omaha and Council Bluffs area, as well as occasionally traveling to Fremont or Nebraska City.

You are welcome to join us for whatever walks interest you. No registration is required — simply show up at the meeting point listed for each walk. We gather for snacks and conversation after each walk for those who choose to stay.

Distance varies depending on the weather and trail conditions. On longer hikes, walkers are always welcome to turn back early if they prefer a shorter outing. Many walks are on paved surfaces, others may be on trails in the woods.

Our Spring schedule runs from March through early June, and our Fall schedule starts after Labor Day.

We look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming walks!

Founded 1919
Club History

"Helen Morton looked out of her kitchen window, observed that nature was awakening from a long sleep, and remarked, 'I must get outdoors.' … The four met out where the city ends and the country begins. Each brought along a new friend because joys are always multiplied when shared. Promptly they decided to merge their separate trails into one purposeful pilgrimage. The pilgrimage started on that occasion has never faltered."

— Edwin S. Jewell, first OWC Vice President (written in the 1920s)

The Omaha Walking Club had its beginning on March 30, 1919, when four women set out together and decided to make it a habit. That first outing grew to 25 walkers, who elected Edith Tobitt as the club's first President.

Currently, we meet for walks on Sundays at 2 pm. We walk one Sunday each in January and February, then every Sunday from March to early June and September through November. During July and August walks are intermittent due to heat and vacations. December is our only month off.

Each year we plan about 30 walks, most averaging 2 to 3 miles, with occasional longer options. In addition to walks, we enjoy a variety of outings including brunches, ethnic dinners, pickleball, and occasional winery visits.

Joining the club
Club Membership
  • The annual membership fee is $15.00, due after your second walk with the group.
  • Because some of our walks visit Fontenelle Forest and Neale Woods, and given the club's long history with Fontenelle Forest, we suggest members also join Fontenelle Forest.
